To steal from the army: Who makes a fortune from armor?
729 mln UAH of damages for Ukraine for the last 6 years. It’s an approximate calculation of TV program Hroshi and its journalist Olexander Kryzhanivsky. His recent program investigates the armor corruption scandals within the defence sector.
Ukraine buys armor for armored vehicles abroad, in Finland and Sweden. Contractors of the Special Defence Order purchase armor not from the producers directly but via intermediaries. Thus, the Polish company Textprotect has an exclusive right to importing Finnish steel MIILUX to Ukraine. This armor is used for different types of armored vehicles. Due to the data collected by the journalist, the profit of these intermediaries is huge. Arey company that produces armored vehicles in Ukraine signed a direct contract with the Finnish producer managed to purchase the armor much cheaper: at the price 2200 euro/ton instead of 8000 euro/ton.
NAKO Secretary General Olena Tregub says that such shell companies are used to basically sell supply parts at a bigger price and move money out of the country. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the State Bureau of Investigations have already lunched proceedings and check foreign intermediaries that imported armor to Ukraine.
