NATO’s door is open for Ukraine and its people. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed this in his answer to NAKO’s Executive Director Olena Tregub during an online session on January 28, 2022. Speaking from NATO headquarters in Brussels, he stressed the importance of an independent choice for any country that wants to join the Alliance. The question was about changing the Russia-promoted narrative that NATO is expanding into Ukraine with a narrative reflecting the reality that its society is actually the one striving for NATO and pressuring Ukrainian elites to reform the country to bring it closer to NATO. Does Putin understand that the majority of the Ukrainian population want to join NATO and if he understood this would he act differently in the current security crisis?
The conference was organized by the renowned U.S. analytical centre, the Atlantic Council. The key topic of the event was NATO’s response to growing tensions in Europe, primarily due to the build-up of Russian military forces on the border with Ukraine. The Atlantic Council invited civil society representatives from around the world to participate in the conference. Olena Tregub is a Millennium Fellowship Fellow at the Atlantic Council.
